Illustrated Recipe: Berry Crumble
I went to a BBQ last weekend. Perfect way to kick off the start of summer in the rainy Bay Area. With berries back in season and a whole lot of leftover flour in my cupboards, I wanted to make a simple dessert to bring. With the help of a YouTube video by Food Wishes, I made a berry crumble that everyone enjoyed.
Since I adjusted the original recipe for a bigger serving size (roughly 20 servings), I wanted to jot down how I made the my crumble. But writing down a simple text recipe just wasn’t as fun as drawing it. So my grabbed my Apple Pencil and opened Procreate.
Ingredients
These measurements yield a perfect party portion in a 13” x 9” glass pan (4-quart).
Instructions
Mix all dry ingredients: flour, baking powder, 1.5 cups of sugar, and salt.
Grate sticks of butter. Mix by hand.
Mix in wet ingredients. If mixture is too dry, add teaspoons of apple cider vinegar or water incrementally.
Create berry mixture by combining: berries, lemon juice, lemon zest, 1/2 cup of sugar, and cornstarch.
Spread half of crumble mixture on bottom of pan. Flatten and condense. (I used a flat measuring cup to do so.) Layer in the berry mixture. Toss the rest of the crumble on top. Use the squeeze and crumble method to get different sized crumble lumps.
Bake at 375 degrees F. for about 30-35 minutes. When the top crumble layer is golden brown and berry juice is oozing from the edges, it’s good to go! Wait for it to cool down and serve!
I ended up picking up some vanilla ice cream to serve with the berry crumble, to everyone’s delight. I totally forgot to take photos of the final product (too busy enjoying food and life) but here is a process pic! I actually baked the party size crumble in the large 13” x 9” pan as well as a small portion in a ramekin to taste test without having to dig into the big one!
